A book explaining and embracing same sex couples, specifically a family with two daddies, Daddy, Papa and Me written by Leslea Newman is wonderful. The premise is simple; a toddler spends the day with his or her daddies. They happily play hide-and-seek and dress-up, and the day ends with a bath and a kiss goodnight. It is a great representation of the loving bond between families – especially between daddies and their children.
The story is quite rhythmic with sweet, simple phrases that move you from one page to the next. The colorful illustrations are perfect for a child because they are bright, cheery and whimsical. It is clearly a thoughtful book helping to express unconditional love in a same-sex relationship.
Newman has written 60 books including: A Letter to Harvey Milk, Nobody’s Mother, The Boy Who Cried Fabulous, Heather Has Two Mommies and many more. For her brilliant works, she has received numerous awards including: Poetry Fellowships from the Massachusetts Artists Fellowship Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts, the Highlights for Children Fiction Writing Award, the James Baldwin Award for Cultural Achievement, and three Pushcart Prize Nominations.
Illustrator, Carol Thompson is a well-known and respected illustrator from England. Carol received a Mother Goose Award for her children’s book illustrations in the UK. She is a mother to three boys, and she has written and illustrated over 50 books, which have since been translated into numerous languages including Lebanese, Soix, Dakots and Ojibwe.
