Expectant Dad: Listening
When you’re an expectant daddy you can expect a few bumps in the road, along with the joy, excitement and anticaption you are feeling about the arrival of your new baby.. The challenges you will experience are normal, and can be somewhat difficult, but you should try to remain positive and available to your wife – because after all, she’s the one carrying the baby!
During the past several weeks we have been looking down the long, expecting road and learning, thanks to Romi Lassally, what to expect when your wife’s expecting.
In 7 Surprising Dad-to-be Facts: What to Expect from Him When You’re Expecting, written by Romi Lassally, explains that expectant daddies, much like expectant mothers, can be cranky, have wild hormones, gain weight and build a nest. Today, we will add that expectant daddies become better listeners too.
Lassally explains that an expectant daddies hearing center may change in order to enable him to hear the cries of the baby, which she says, “he may never have been able to hear before.” She goes on to explain, “Because newborns need round-the-clock care, Mother Nature changes parents’ brain circuitry to put them on high alert. New mothers still hear better than their partners do, but at least he has a tending instinct, too.”
Mr. Daddy says:
Well this concept is interesting; I believe that my hearing did improve, but maybe not in the way Lassally suggests. I can hear Mrs. Daddy when she gets up in the middle of the night to take care of our baby, but I never actually hear the baby crying. Often times Mrs. Daddy will ask me, “did you hear the baby last night?” And I have to admit to myself, and now to all of you, “nope, sorry, just heard you get out of bed.” Note to self (and to all new daddies): Purchase a new monitor and put in on my side of the bed so I can get up the next time the baby cries!
Between Lassally’s research and Mr. Daddy’s own personal experiences and advice, you can see that being an expectant father has its own set of challenges. Our advice is to stay calm and have some fun.
Two more surprising expectant daddy facts are on their way. Stay tuned next week to get more stories and advice from expert, Mr. Daddy while learning another fact from the research of Lassally herself.
Until next time,
