It’s finally here! The day you’ve been planning for, the day you might have thought you had a little extra time to prepare for, the day that always sneaks right up on you: Your baby is turning one! And for most new parents, one question still remains, “What will I get them for their very first birthday?!”
The pressure of getting the perfect gift for anyone, especially a young child, has become a bit stressful these days. And, as a mommy to two young boys I know, first year parents are often too busy to spend hours scouring the web researching all the latest and greatest gadgets. So I’m here to help; I’ve come to rescue you from birthday present peril.
I’ve put together my list of top birthday gifts for one year olds. I hope it will help you be creative in picking out a gift your child will love.
1. The Step2 Whisper Quiet Buggy
This little toy car is great! Coming in pink or blue, it has a sculpted seat that will hold-in a 1 year old safely, it is very quiet, easy to push, comes with a trunk for your little one’s goodies (ie: jacket, sunscreen or even your cell phone) and comes complete with a cup holder for your little driver’s beverage of choice. This is a great toy to help get kids excited about going outside. And if you really want the “wow factor,” order a personalized license plate online, and attach it to the bumper!
2. Mega Blocks
These are very large plastic blocks that come in vibrant colors and are often even sold in combination with fun play sets like a princess couch or a fire engine that you can build the blocks upon. Mega Blocks encourage self-play and developmental skills. You’ll be amazed at how well young people are able to build, and it’s a lot of fun to watch the wheels of creativity, design and problem solving turn within their growing minds.
3. Little People
These great toys also come in sets. My son loves the Little People Rumblin’ Rocks Dump Truck. This is a great first car to push around. Little People toys are pretty much what they sound like: chunky little people or animals for your child to enjoy. The opportunities for Little People are endless; my 9 month old can safely chew on them and my two-year-old son still enjoys playing with them now.
4. Stacking Bath Cups
Stacking Bath Cups are available in many different brands and colors. It’s nice to have a variety as some have pour spouts or holes for water to rain through, and some remain solid cups. You can’t go wrong with any of them, as, kids love to pour and mix water with their cups in the tub. It adds something extra to bath time helping ensure that experience remains fun and positive.
5. Fisher Price Laugh and Learn Learning Home Playset
This little house is incredible. It has lots of things for your little one to discover. Playing with this toy teaches skills such as turning on and off a light,opening or closing a window, and much more. There is a door that your child can crawl through and plenty of musical buttons to push. This toy provides endless fun for young children.
6. Corolle Dolls
These make great first dolls. They are very soft and lightweight and even have eyes that open and close. They also, uniquely, smell amazing; one whiff of the faint smell of vanilla and you will be sold. The Corolle Dolls come in a variety of styles and offer plenty of accessories, such as baby beds and small strollers. When you purchase one of these dolls as a first birthday gift, the accessories easily lend themselves to Christmas present ideas or even second birthday gifts.
7. Melissa and Doug Jumbo Knob Puzzles
The Rainforest and Large Farm are especially cute, and are two of my boys’ favorites. These puzzles are brightly colored and have a limited number of pieces making them ideal for the beginner puzzle solver. Each of the pieces has a large knob that helps the child place the puzzle piece in the correct position. These puzzles offer a great deal of fun, and they’re not a lot of clean up – it’s a real win-win!
8. Sassy Look Photo Album
Now I know the recommended age says 3+ months, but this is a great gift for a growing child! It is completely kid-proof, so your child can hold it and enjoy it on their own – without being able to rip it to pieces. You can even make this gift more special by preloading it with pictures of people close to the child’s heart, including a picture of yourself, of course! The photo album is a perfect gift for a first birthday because a child goes through so many changes between the ages 1 to 2, and having photos to look through to be a great comfort to them.
9. Fisher Price Infant to Toddler Swing
The Fisher Price Swing is a perfect first swing for any child. It has many available options as it reclines or sits upright with a tray, which will be a big help when they are older. The swing encourages outdoor play, time together and can attach to a wide range of places. I highly recommend this swing as a gift you and your child will enjoy for many years.
10. Clothes
First birthday parties are notorious for overwhelming kids with too many toys. I recommend purchasing a small toy or book and buying an outfit for the birthday boy or girl. After all they will need to look stylish while playing with all their new loot! And did I mention their parents will love you for it? Some great stores for kid’s clothing are Gap Kids, Janie and Jack and Mini Boden and Peek.
